BB governor reaffirms promoting women entrepreneurship
Reaffirming Bangladesh Bank’s (BB) commitment to promoting women entrepreneurship, bank governor Dr Atiur Rahman said, banks and non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs) have been asked for prioritization of women entrepreneurs in providing financial services.
“Promoting women entrepreneurship is one of our key policy interventions . . . half of our population is women and unless we engage them in activities where they have competitive edge over others we will be losing national output by under utilizing their skills, creative and innovative ideas,” said the governor while speaking at a seminar here, reports BSS.
Right bodies accuse govt of favoring MNCs
Fifteen civil society organisations promoting human rights on Saturday accused the government of favoring multinational companies (MNCs) with tax rules.

The United Kingdom (UK) has welcomed Bangladesh’s endorsement of the Declaration of Commitment to End Sexual Violence in Conflict.
Bangladesh, Nigeria and Pakistan have announced their endorsement of the Declaration this week, launched as part of the UK’s Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative.

The two-day biennial German-Bangladesh consultation, 2014 will be held in the capital on May 7-8 to review the implementation of the existing German-funded projects in Bangladesh as well as their possible future funding.

Dhaka, Colombo to sign coastal shipping deal to boost trade
Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have agreed to enhance shipping connectivity between the two countries to expand the bilateral trade and commerce.
Following a seminar that was organized in connection with the first Bangladesh-Sri Lanka joint working group meeting in Dhaka, Bangladesh Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan told media Wednesday that the shipping connectivity between Dhaka and Colombo would strengthen the bilateral relations.
“With the shipping connectivity, bilateral relations between the two South Asian nations would also be strengthened,” the Minister said while inaugurating the seminar on ‘Increasing maritime connectivity between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka: Reality and possibilities’.
BD’s foreign, domestic policies influenced by India: US
While appreciating Bangladesh’s counterterrorism efforts as there had been no major terrorist incidents in 2013, the United States in its ‘Country Reports on Terrorism 2013’ says the country’s foreign and domestic policies are heavily influenced by the region’s major powers, particularly India.
“In past years, the India-Bangladesh relationship has provided openings for transnational threats, but the current government has demonstrated its interest in regional cooperation on counterterrorism” says the report released on Wednesday.
Lauding its counterterrorism measures, the report says, “The (Bangladesh) government’s ongoing counterterrorism efforts have made it more difficult for transnational terrorists to operate in or use Bangladesh territory.”
