The World Bank (WB) urged the authorities concerned to expedite construction of Siddhirganj 335 megawatts (MW) peaking power plant.
The WB came up with the advice after routine review of the project implementation by a joint team of the multi-donor agency and the government.
The team found 46 percent progress in the plant’s construction, which began in 2010. However, the team saw the construction for gas transmission pipeline and power evacuation system was nearing completion with 80 percent and 98 percent work completed respectively.

The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) will build an enough advance stock of five Ramadan essentials in an effort to help ensure smooth supply of those items during the fasting month beginning in July next, said officials.
The five items are edible oil, sugar and lentil, gram/chickpea and date the demand of which skyrockets during Ramadan because of their high consumption, knocking up the prices, UNB reports.
Though the officials would not say anything about the stock quantity right now, they told UNB that the TCB dealers will get the uninterrupted supply of the essentials as per their requirement during the holy month.

Secretary General of United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad) Dr Mukhisa Kituyi has said Bangladesh is an increasingly attractive destination for foreign direct investment (FDI).
He said the Investment Policy Review (IPR) reflects the desire of Bangladesh to build a successful investment framework and policy environment that attracts not only foreign investors, but also promotes domestic private sector development.
“This will contribute to positioning the country as an important manufacturing centre in Asia,” said Dr Kituyi in the sixth session of the Investment, Enterprise and Development Commission of Unctad held in Geneva recently, according to message received here on Friday.

The two-day biennial German-Bangladesh consultation, 2014 will be held in the capital on May 7-8 to review the implementation of the existing German-funded projects in Bangladesh as well as their possible future funding.

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have agreed to enhance shipping connectivity between the two countries to expand the bilateral trade and commerce.
Following a seminar that was organized in connection with the first Bangladesh-Sri Lanka joint working group meeting in Dhaka, Bangladesh Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan told media Wednesday that the shipping connectivity between Dhaka and Colombo would strengthen the bilateral relations.
“With the shipping connectivity, bilateral relations between the two South Asian nations would also be strengthened,” the Minister said while inaugurating the seminar on ‘Increasing maritime connectivity between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka: Reality and possibilities’.
While appreciating Bangladesh’s counterterrorism efforts as there had been no major terrorist incidents in 2013, the United States in its ‘Country Reports on Terrorism 2013’ says the country’s foreign and domestic policies are heavily influenced by the region’s major powers, particularly India.
“In past years, the India-Bangladesh relationship has provided openings for transnational threats, but the current government has demonstrated its interest in regional cooperation on counterterrorism” says the report released on Wednesday.
