New archives shine light on history of black Britons

The first archive dedicated to the culture and experiences of black people in Britain opened on Thursday, with the aim of shining a light on a long overlooked history. The o7-million ($11.9-million, 8.8-million euro) Black Cultural Archives houses books, diaries, newspapers, photographs and artefacts dating back almost 2,000 years, as well as an exhibition space and learning tools for schools. It is the culmination of three decades of campaigning and fundraising, and those behind the project hope it will increase awareness of the long history of people of African and Caribbean roots in Britain. “It’s very much a hidden history,” Paul Reid, the director of the archives, told AFP at a launch event filled with performances of music, poetry and dance.

Japan trade deficit surges to record on weak exports

Japan’s trade deficit ballooned to a record in the first half of the year as exports fell further in June, data showed today, ramping up pressure on the central bank to unveil fresh measures to boost the economy. The figures come days after the government cut its fiscal year growth forecasts, blaming weak exports and a jump in imports as well as the negative impact of an April sales tax hike on consumer spending and business confidence. Japan has seen widening trade deficits since the Fukushima nuclear crisis in March 2011 forced it to switch off its atomic reactors and turn to pricey fossil fuel imports to plug the energy gap.

Airlines cancel Israel flights over Gaza rocket threat

Major US, European and Canadian airlines canceled flights to and from Israel Tuesday, after a rocket fired from Gaza struck near its main international airport in Tel Aviv. The cancelations highlighted heightened worldwide fears of a rocket hitting a passenger jet in the wake of last week’s downing of a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 over rebel-held eastern Ukraine with nearly 300 on board. That incident underscored the vulnerability of commercial aircraft to surface-to-air missiles, even at cruising altitudes in excess of 30,000 feet. deltaIn t...
