ILO welcomes upgradation of Bangladesh labour inspectorate
The International Labour Organisation (ILO) welcomes the decision of the Government of Bangladesh to upgrade the Chief Inspector of Factories and Establishments office to a 'Directorate' as an important step in the implementation of one of the commitments agreed by the Government in the National Tripartite Plan of Action on Fire Safety and Structural Integrity and the EU Sustainability Compact issued on 8 July 2013.
The Government issued orders on 15 January 2014 sanctioning 679 new staff positions in the Directorate including 392 new inspector positions. With this upgrade, the number of labour and factory inspectors will increase to a total of 575 from the current 183 positions.

BPC to sell 170,000bls naphtha
Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) will issue a tender to sell 170,000 barrels of naphtha for March 12-14 loading from Chittagong, a company official said on Monday.
The tender, which is likely to be issued this week, will close on Feb. 24, with validity up to March 2.
State-owned BPC resumed exports of naphtha in November after a four-month hiatus for maintenance and repairs at its sole refinery.

Bangladesh to import more wheat to boost reserves
Bangladesh will take advantage of a slump in global prices for wheat by speeding up imports to build state reserves, and soon plans to issue tenders for 100,000 tonnes of the grain, a top procurement official said on Monday.
Such imports are crucial for the South Asian nation to feed its poor and keep domestic prices stable at a time when political turmoil has hit supply chains and government reserves are at five-year lows.
“We are soon going to issue tenders to import 100,000 tonnes of wheat,” Mohammad Badrul Hassan, procurement director in the Directorate General of Food, told Reuters.
