Tougher programmes if deadlock continues, threaten business leaders
Country’s business leaders threatened to announce tougher programmes if the current crippling political deadlock continues.
“We want a peaceful environment in the country to run our businesses smoothly,” Kazi Akramuddin Ahmed, president of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), said during their protest programme carrying white flags in front of FBCCI building at Motiheel on Saturday.
He urged the political leaders to reach a consensus to end the escalating violence and ensure a business-friendly environment in the country.

Korea to mark 40 years’ relationship with Bangladesh

President, PM pay tributes to martyred intellectuals
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today paid profound tributes to the martyred intellectuals by placing wreaths at the Martyred Intellectuals Mausoleum at Mirpur on the occasion of Martyred Intellectuals Day.
The President placed the wreaths at 6.50 am to show his homage to the great heroes, who sacrificed their lives for the cause of the country and the nation.
President Abdul Hamid was received by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Shipping and Liberation War Affairs Minister Shajahan Khan, reports BSS.

Vegetables soothes but other mark upward trend
The price of vegetables in the capital’s kitchen market has fallen as the supply increases, but that of other commodities like edible oil, sugar, salt, rice and wheat marked an upward trend.
Onion price is decreased as the newly harvest onion arrived in the markets. New arrival onion with leaves was selling at Tk50 to 60 while local (old) onion was selling at TK 85 per kg, imported onion at Tk 65 to 75. Ginger (local) was selling at Tk 180, China ginger at Tk 200, garlic (China) at Tk 90, local garlic at Tk85 and garlic (one cell) at Tk 130.

Political crisis threatening hard-earned economic progress: UN
The current political crisis in Bangladesh is exacting a heavy, human, social and economic toll, seriously threatening the hard-earned economic and social progress that the country has achieved, warns UN with a release form its news centre.
Voicing strong concern over widespread violence in Bangladesh that has left dozens of people dead since last month, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resolve differences over upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for January through dialogue, said the release published here on Wednesday.

Addl security for power plants sought as violence mounting
The ministry of power, energy and mineral resources has requested the home ministry for additional security around the power plants across the country, in view of the worsening political situation.
“We have asked for additional security around the power plants which are not under Key Point Installation (KPI),” said Tapos Kumar Roy, Additional Secretary of the ministry.
“At the same time, the ministry has also asked the power supply entities to build up own security measures from their own resources without fully depending on the government,” Tapos said.
