Rice imports soar amid high domestic prices

The country’s rice import value has increased to about $229.59 million during the first nine months of the fiscal year 2013-14 (July 2013 - June 2014), up nearly fourteen times from about $15.81 million recorded during the same period in FY 2012-13, according to a report released by the Bank of Bangladesh (BB). According to data from Food Ministry, Bangladesh imported around 374,560 tons rice as of May 19, 2014, of which around 371,500 tons are imported by private sector and only 3,060 tons are imported by the government. Bangladesh imported 28,930 tons rice in FY 2012-13 (25,270 tons by private sector and 3,660 tons by the government).

Tea prices plunge on poor local demand

Tea prices in Bangladesh dropped on Tuesday at the second auction of the new season on weak demand from local buyers despite the arrival of fresh and good quality leaf, brokers said. City commuters in scarcity of public sanitation

Speakers in an event in the capital have expressed concern over the public sanitation system in the city, especially for the commuters. They have urged to construct proper sanitation facilities, primarily safe and hygienictoilets, for the commuters. The event was organised marking inaugural of a new public toilet at Gabtoli Bus Terminal in the capital. Dhaka North City Corporation has constructed the establishment with support of H&M Conscious Foundation through WaterAid Bangladesh.The public toilet will have separate toilet chambers and shower facilities for men and women and persons with disability. It will also have a left luggage locker service for the toilet users.

Bangladesh to sell naphtha at highest price

Bangladesh Petroleum Corp (BPC) will sell 170,000 barrels of naphtha to MRI Trading in May at a premium of $1.15 a barrel to Singapore quotes on a free-on-board (FOB) basis, the highest price in more than a year and sharply up from a previous sale.
