Garment exports decline in July

Exports of readymade garments from Bangladesh registered double-digit decline in the first month of financial year 2015-16, according to the latest government data. In July 2015, Bangladesh earned $2.215 billion in garment exports, showing a decrease of 12.02 per cent compared to exports of $2.518 billion made in the corresponding month of the previous fiscal, Export Promotion Bureau data showed. Bangladesh needs to do more to ensure labor rights in the country, says a Caritas official reacting to the U.S. keeping the country off its list of developing nations who enjoy special trade privileges. “If Bangladesh can ensure labor rights, and regain the generalized system of preferences, the industry can make even more progress and the workers will benefit greatly,” says Caritas Dhaka regional director Ronjon F. The rapid growth of Bangladesh’s garment industry has been a blessing and a burden to the country. Even as it has provided jobs to millions and helped Bangladesh cut its poverty rate, it has also exploited the nation’s poorest and most desperate, leading to the gratuitous and preventable deaths of thousands (see: Rana Plaza in 2013).
