The University of Dhaka or simply DU, is the oldest university in modern Bangladesh. Established during the British Raj in 1921, it gained a reputation as the “Oxford of the East” during its early years and has been a significant contributor to the modern history of Bangladesh. After the partition of India, it became the focal point of progressive and democratic movements in Pakistan. Its students and teachers played a central role in the rise of Bengali nationalism and the independence of Bangladesh.
Today, on 7th April 7, 2014, this legendary university is going to have its 48th convocation. The program will begin around 11 am.
President M Abdul Hamid, also the chancellor of the university, is expected to preside over the ceremony while Prof Rolf Heuer, the director general of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), will attend the function as the convocation speaker.
Prof Rolf Heuer will be honored with the Doctor of Science degree at the program.
Vice Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique told daily sun that all preparations for holding the convocation had already been completed.
The program will begin at the central playground of the university. The main gate of the venue will remain open for participants and invited guests from 9:00am onward.
Over 8,312 graduates will be conferred with degrees at the convocation ceremony. Graduates are all in a festive mood to celebrate the colourful event.Hundreds of new graduates who got registered for the formal farewell programme were seen capturing group and individual photos by giving a final touch to their beloved academia.”Only a graduate can feel the ecstasy of convocation, which I am feeling after getting my academic costumes,” said Protiti Shahid, newly-graduated student of the Department of Accounting and Information System.
Her juvenile face just become cheerless and gloomy when asked about the feelings as she is going to put an end to the academic circle. “Unfortunately, through the convocation we are also going to miss the adorable campus life” she added.Like Protiti, umber marvellous graduates of the country’s premiere university expressed their feelings to the reporter saying that their dreams are going to be true through convocation.
Meanwhile, the DU authorities had completed distribution of convocation gowns and had also organized a rehearsal for the convocation at the Curzon Hall ground on Sunday afternoon.
DU proctor Amzad Ali said tight security measures have been taken to make the program a success.
Convocation participants have been asked not to bring mobile phone, camera and hand bag at the convocation venue.
