Inauguration of construction of public toilet in city

Planned public sanitation will be developed – Sayeed Khokon

Dhaka South City Corporation- DSCC’s Mayor Said Khokon inaugurated construction of public toilet in city’s one of the most busy places Karwan Bazar’s Panthakunja today , 13 August 2015.

He says, we will develop a planned public sanitation system in city for all inhabitants of Dhaka specially for pedestrians, day do day traveler, women and specially for those who passes a long time in city street due to traffic. Accordingly, Mr. Mayor committed to build 50 modern and women friendly public toilets in densely populated area.

_IMS0632 (1)At that time Advocate M. A. Hamid Khan, Councilor, 21 no. ward of DSCC & Dr. Md. Liakath Ali, Program & Policy Advocacy Director, WaterAid Bangladesh were with him.

Last year Dhaka North City Corporation, Dhaka South City Corporation, Dhaka WASA & Water Aid Bangladesh jointly signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to public toilets work. On the continuation of this Thursday Sayeed Khokon inaugurated the construction of public toilet, so that the work starts. WaterAid & H&M Conscious Foundation are providing financial and technical assistance to this.

While inaugurating the construction Dr. Md. Liakath Ali, Director- Program & Policy Advocacy, Water Aid Bangladesh says, ’WaterAid aims to set up functional public toilet system, their renovation and effective business model for toilet management’.

A study on the public toilets  in Dhaka City commissioned by Water Aid in 2011 revealed that, out of 47 public toilets more than half of them are not in minimum serviceable condition and they don’t have women & child friendly facilities.’
