The government has declared a national day of mourning on Tuesday to honor the lives lost during the recent quota reform movement, which has claimed 147 lives, including those of law enforcement personnel.
The decision was announced during a Cabinet meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office on Monday, according to media reports. Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan confirmed on Sunday the extent of the tragedy, highlighting the violent clashes and unrest that have gripped the nation.
The quota reform movement, which began on July 1, saw students demanding reforms in civil service job quotas. The situation escalated dramatically following a violent clash at Dhaka University on July 15, leading to nationwide protests. The following days were marked by widespread violence, vandalism, arson, and casualties across various parts of the country, including the capital.
Among the deceased were students, including members of the Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling Awami League, according to the home minister. The government’s decision to observe a day of mourning underscores the gravity of the situation and the profound loss experienced by the nation.
