Nurul Haque Nur, the former VP of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) and President of the Gono Odhikar Parishad, reportedly spent 6.5 million Taka on the recent quota reform movement. Funds were allegedly brought in from multiple Middle Eastern countries.
According to sources, Nur allocated a portion of this amount to leaders of the Gono Odhikar Parishad in three areas of Dhaka: Badda, Mirpur, and Lalbagh. The information surfaced following Nur’s arrest based on accusations of inciting the quota reform movement. During interrogation by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Nur disclosed details about the expenditures.
Several senior DB officials have confirmed that Nur has significant experience from the 2018 quota reform protests. He had successfully mobilized general students during that movement and subsequently formed a political party. In the current quota reform movement, Nur is believed to have maintained contact with coordinators from behind the scenes.
The developments highlight Nur’s continued involvement in student politics and activism, raising questions about external funding and its impact on domestic political movements.
