Over 1300 people have arrested as the interim government has launched security operations nationwide on Saturday aims to curb unrest and restore peace named “Operation Devil Hunt”
According to police headquarters sources, law enforcement agencies have arrested over 1300 people during the “Operation Devil Hunt” raid following a violent attack on students and the civilians at the residence of ousted former minister AKM Mozammel Haque on Friday night.
Following the incident, a high-level meeting was held at the Ministry of Home Affairs, where law enforcement agencies discussed measures for maintaining the law and order situation as well as bringing those involved to book.
According to police sources, in Gazipur, a total of 83 people were arrested in Gazipur during “Operation Devil Hunt” on Sunday morning.
Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) of Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Taherul Haque Chauhan said that 43 people were arrested across eight police stations in Gazipur city.
The identities of the arrestees were not immediately disclosed.
In Noakhali, the joint forces arrested 7 leaders and activists of Awami League as part of the nationwide ‘Operation Devil Hunt’ on Saturday night.
In Khagrachari, during the operation police have arrested 4 activists of banned Bangladesh Chhatra League from Guimara upazila.
In Cumilla, 3 people, affiliated with the Awami League (AL) and its associate bodies Jubo League (JL) and the banned organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), have arrested during the Operation.
The Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said the ‘who attacked the students and the public in Gazipur have been brought to book. The rest will soon be exposed to justice.”
Earlier, Nasimul Ghani replying a question during a press briefing over the “Operation Devil Hunt” at the conference room of the Home Ministry at the Secretariat in the capital on Sunday.
He said they have briefed all the forces so that they can carry out the operation in a focused way to maintain the law and order and protect the human rights.
Replying to a question, he said police will lead the Operation Devil Hunt.
“He said, ‘our target is to neutralise the pockets from where attempts are being made to destabilise the country. The operation will continue as long as necessary,” he said.
“It is a police action,” he said, adding that the military, which was given magistracy power after the August 5 changeover, will act to help maintain the law and order.
