Vietnam and Bangladesh officially established their diplomatic ties on February 17, 1973. Since then, they have remained the traditional friendship and fine co-operation; facilitated visits at all levels; signed a number of agreements on economics, trade, investment, culture, information, agriculture, science-technology, and aviation. The bilateral economic-trade co-operation has seen a rapid increase. In the past five years, the total export turnover has increased by 2.5 times, from US$288 million in 2010 to nearly US$800 million in 2014. The two sides have facilitated visits by delegations from national defence, culture-sports-tourism, and labour and social affairs sectors to learn experience from each other. Bangladesh also shared its experience in United Nations peacekeeping operations with Vietnam. The two countries have co-operated well in a number of regional and international forums. During the visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in December, 2012, Bangladesh recognised Vietnam as a full market economy.

The State level visit to Vietnam by Bangladesh President this time aims to discuss measures and orientation for the development of the traditional friendship and multifaceted co-operation between two countries, notably in economy, agriculture and human resource training as well as exchange views on international issues and areas of mutual interest. In the meantime, the visit helps strengthen and reinforce the fine relationship between Vietnam and Bangladesh, meeting the aspirations of the two peoples, for peace, stability, co-operation and development in the region and in the world.
