Bangladesh looks to power up
Bangladesh has made huge strides in expanding its power generation capacity, but needs to concentrate more on weaknesses in its transmission and distribution system.
That was the conclusion of a panel of local experts at FinanceAsia’s 4th annual Bangladesh Investment Summit, held at the Ritz Carlton in Hong Kong on Tuesday.
The country’s foremost power expert, Dr Tawif-e-Elahi Chowdhury said the improvement in generating capacity since 2009 had been nothing short of a ‘miracle’.
Chowdhury attributed the transformation to “the audacious and visionary leadership” of Prime Minister Sheik Hasina, to whom he is an energy adviser.

UNESCAP expresses optimism on BD economy
A UN body namely United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) has expressed its optimism about Bangladesh’s potential though trimmed its growth forecast for the economy in 2015-16 fiscal year (July 2015-June 2016) at 6.8 percent.
UNESCAP made the projection in a latest report it published in Dhaka on Thursday, reports Xinhua.
“The outlook for growth remains optimistic, with growth being projected at 6.8 percent in 2016 and 7 percent in 2017,” said the report, titled “Economic and Social Survey of Asia and The Pacific 2016.”

Beximco launches 1st ever DTH service in BD
