30-day closure of newspaper advised

The Bangladesh Press Council may have the power to hold up the publication of any newspaper or service of any news agency for a maximum of 30 days if the paper or agency violates the directives of the council. The law commission, presenting its views on the draft of the Press Council Act’s amendment, recommended to the press council that such a provision be included in the amendment by the Bangladesh Law Commission. The recommendation was signed by Bangladesh Law Commission chairman ABM Khairul Haque, its members M Shah Alam and Justice ATM Fazle Kabir.

Govt to prepare tower business in telecom sector

The government will prepare tower business in telecom sector considering customer interest as well as environmental concern, state minister for posts and telecommunication Tarana Halim said. The minister  was addressing a seminar as chief guest on ‘The Prospect of Tower Business in Bangladesh’, organized by a Telecom Reporters Network, Bangladesh (TRNB) in a local hotel, on Thursday, says a press release. “Uncontrolled tower of telecom harm environment…….we will consider level playing field to allow new player for tower business but up gradation of network would also be considered during policy in this regard,” she said.
