Frontier markets: A second look at Bangladesh

Much has been written over the past few months about Bangladesh and none of it has been very complimentary. So I felt it was time again to revisit that country and see if any progress had been made on the economic front. Initially, I was pleased to read a report on the Asian Development Bank’s website indicating that the economic growth forecast for 2015 is 6.1% and 6.4% in 2016. Those indeed are very good numbers, considering that the main revenue-marketproducing element is the service sector and in particular the textile industry. Recently, however, the...

ALRC said, many witnesses have testified to law enforcement agents’ involvement in these cases, and the pattern of abductions and the profiles of victims suggest that disappearances are used by the government to silence political opponents. Efforts by human-rights-Bangladeshvictims’ families to obtain information or justice have been ign...

Earlier this month, Rocket Internet announced that it would be stepping up aggressive growth in Asia once more, with one new launch per quarter to expand in emerging markets. Today, the e-commerce giant is following through on that strategy: Daraz — an e-commerce portal modelled on Amazon and serving Bangladesh, Pakistan and Myanmar — is today announcing a $56 million (€50 million) round of financing. This is the first major funding for Daraz, which started in 2012 as a fashion portal before expanding to home and other categories. The funding is also notable because it’s not coming daraz

BD should prioritise Ctg port development

A leading Bangladeshi economist has declared that the country will not be able to emerge as a middle-income country and achieve the $50 billon garment export target without prioritising development of Chittagong, according to media reports in Bangladesh. “We cannot achieve the $50 billon export target without opening and widening a second hub for the sector in Chittagong after its huge growth in Dhaka and its adjoining areas,” said Hossain Zillur Rahman. Rahman made the comments while addressing a roundtable on “realising $50 billion target for Ctg port
