India set to seal major power deal in BD, beating China
State-run Indian firm Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) is poised to seal a contract to build a $1.6 billion power plant in Bangladesh, beating out a Chinese competitor in the latest commercial tussle between the region’s two dominant powers.
After China’s recent success in pushing development projects in Sri Lanka, a breakthrough in Bangladesh would be welcome news for Indian officials who have long fretted over Beijing’s encroachment on to territory it considers its own back yard.

As part of its neighbourhood-first foreign policy, the National Democratic Alliance government has adopted an aggressive financing approach to set up infrastructure projects in the bordering countries. A case in point being the largest overseas power project order of $1.6 billion, set to be secured by state-run Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (Bhel) in Bangladesh.
Competing against Chinese manufacturers, Bhel emerged as the lowest bidder, facilitated by concessional finance from the Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank). The exercise led by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) marks the culmination of India’s efforts to impress Bangladesh to allow Bhel to bid for the coal-fuelled power project.

BD to buy electricity from Tripura at Tk 6.44 per unit
Bangladesh struck to a deal with India on Saturday over importing 100 megawatt electricity from the Palatana power plant in Tripura of India.
The state minister for power, energy and mineral resources, Nasrul Hamid, in a meeting with Tripura’s power minister fixed the electricity price at US$ 0.8 per unit. The price stands at Tk 6.5 and Indian 5.5 rupees per unit.
The power import is expected to start from February.

LafargeHolcim to increase limestone production
LafargeHolcim plans to increase production of limestone from its Nongtrai mines in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district, Bangladesh, from two to five million tonnes per year. The company also plans to export limestone.
The company has received notice from the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board for a
public hearing on the expansion plan at Nontrai for excavation of limestone. In 2009, the company had applied to Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change for environmental clearance, says a report.

Siemens to supply components for power plant in BD
Siemens has received an order for the supply of key components for the Bibiyana South combined cycle power plant in Bangladesh.
One gas turbine, a steam turbine and a generator are to be installed in the natural-gas-fired single-shaft plant. The total installed electrical generating capacity of the plant will be around 400 megawatts (MW). The operator of the plant is the state-owned power provider Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB).
