Export orders at 13th DITF decline by 50pc

Export orders at the 13th Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF) 2014 declined by nearly 50 per cent mainly due to fewer presence of foreign buyers after a prolonged political turmoil, fair organisers said. Participants at the DITF received only Tk 804 million worth export orders this year against Tk 1.57 billion last year. However, speakers at the concluding ceremony of the fair Monday expressed their hope that gradual improvement of political situation would help boost export of local products along with foreign direct investment in the country, reports the Financial Express.

Economic growth remains impressive

Showing resilience to internal and external crises, Bangladesh economy grew last year at an impressive rate, which was much above the global average, according to Bangladesh Bank (BB) annual report for 2012-13 released here today.The report, a flagship public of the central bank on economy, showed that the economy grew by 6.0 percent in 2013, much higher than the world economy advanced on average.  “Using the 1995-96 base year the Bangladesh economy achieved GDP growth of 6.0 percent in FY13, and 6.2 percent using the 2005-06 base,” the report said. US assistance for Bangladesh will continue

The newly-appointed Mission Director of the United States foreign assistance outlet, USAID, to Bangladesh, Janina Jaruzelski, today said her government would continue to assist Bangladesh “at the same level as before”. “There is broad consensus in Washington that USAID should continue aid to Bangladesh, regardless of the political situation,” she told a press conference at the AmericanCenter here, reports BSS. Bangladesh receives about $200m in aid, bilaterally, from the United States on an average year. The same amount will be available in the current year and also in future, she assured the audience.
