Unexploded mortar shell recovered at SUST

Jalalabad police station of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) recovered an unexploded mortar shell and held its bearer from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) campus on Sunday noon.

The arrestee was identified as Sekul Mia (32) son of Inu Mia, who hailed form Madan upazila under Netrakona district and lived at Jugipara in city near at SUST campus.

IMG_20151004_121118Campus source and Police said, Sekul was founding a buyer to sell the shell thinking that it was a precious metal. Seeing this witnesses informed police.

Being informed, police rushed to the spot and held the arrestee and seized the shell at around 12:00pm at SUST campus.

Sekul Mia, who worked as a day laborer, said that, he found the shell at around ten feet under the soil on Saturday at 5:00pm at Airport area in city when he was digging soil for an establishment purpose. He was carrying it to sell thinking that it was a precious metal, he added.

Sub-Inspector of Jalalabad Police Station and also bomb expert Ariful Islam said, it might be an older shell lying for long. It might be blasted under high extra pressure, he said.

Officer-in-Charge of Jalalabad Police Station Akter Hossain said, Initially I think it’s since ‘71 liberation war, Sekul Mia was held to interrogate.
