US welcomes Dr. Yunus’s call to end violence in Bangladesh

The United States has expressed its strong support for the recent appeal by Bangladesh’s interim government Chief Adviser, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, urging an end to the ongoing violence in the country.

In a statement released on Thursday, the U.S. government reiterated its commitment to working closely with the interim government under Dr. Yunus’s leadership, as it seeks to steer Bangladesh towards a democratic future. The statement was reported by the United News of Bangladesh (UNB).

During a press briefing in Washington, U.S. Department of State Spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized the importance of the interim government in shaping a peaceful and stable future for Bangladesh. “I’m not going to speak to the private diplomatic conversations, but one of the things that we have made clear is that we want to see the interim government chart a democratic future for the people of Bangladesh,” Miller stated.

Miller also confirmed that there has been ongoing communication between the U.S. and the interim government. He noted that the U.S. charge d’affaires was present at Dr. Yunus’s swearing-in ceremony at Bangabhaban on Thursday night. “I don’t know if she spoke to him at the swearing-in, but she did attend,” Miller added.

The U.S. has previously underscored the crucial role of the interim government in ensuring long-term peace and political stability in Bangladesh. The spokesperson urged all parties in the country to refrain from violence and called for full accountability for those responsible for recent incidents of unrest.

“We urge all parties to refrain from further violence. We call for full accountability of all perpetrators of violence,” Miller said, emphasizing that all decisions made by the interim government must adhere to democratic principles, the rule of law, and respect the will of the Bangladeshi people.

Expressing deep concern over the recent reports of deaths, human rights abuses, and injuries in Bangladesh, Miller conveyed the U.S. government’s condolences. “We share our deepest condolences with all who lost loved ones and those who are suffering,” he said, adding that the U.S. will continue to closely monitor the situation in Bangladesh.

Dr. Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel laureate and globally recognized economist, was sworn in as the chief adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government on Thursday night. His appointment has brought renewed optimism for a peaceful and democratic future for the nation.
