WB looks for ways to increase funding in Bangladesh: Kim

Visiting World Bank (WB) president Jim Yong Kim on Monday said the bank was now looking aggressively for increasing its funding to support Bangadesh.

He said the World Bank was no more involved with the construction of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge but it understood the importance of the bridge, reports New Age.

The government is constructing the bridge on own funding after the global bank cancelled 1.2 wbbilllion dollar loan citing conspiracies of corruption in tender process.

Kim said the bank preferred continuing discussion on it but Bangladesh government began works on the bridge.

He said the bank did not have chance to discuss on more funding in Bangladesh earlier.

He hoped that they would find the ways in the next two days to increase the bank’s funding in Bangladesh

Earlier finance minister AMA Muhith requested the bank to increase funding to other projects as the government kept aside huge amount of money for the construction of the bridge.

Kim also announced an additional one billion dollar fund for developing childcare facilities in Bangladesh.

Kim said the fund would be given to develop the situation of child health and nutrition in next two years.
