Non-farm units see 118pc growth, regional disparity unchanged
Though the country experienced a 118 percent growth in non-farm economic units over the last 10 years, regional disparity still remains as usual, reveals the preliminary findings of the Economic Census 2013.
The preliminary report of the Economic Census 2013 was launched by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics at its Agargaon headquarters on Sunday.
The previous Economic Census, conducted over a three-year period from 2001 to 2003, showed that the country had about 37 lakh non-farm economic units, reports UNB.
The preliminary findings of the latest Census, conducted over four months’ time from February to May this year, showed that the number of economic units has increased from 37 lakhs to 82 lakhs over the last 10 years, which is a 118 percent increase.

REHAB, NHA to work together for growth of housing sector
Real Estate and Housing Association of Bangladesh (REHAB) has teamed up with the National Housing Authority (NHA) to work for development of the government's housing sector.
This was disclosed when leaders of REHAB held the association's first meeting with NHA Chairman Shahidul Alam at the housing authority here.
Among others, Vice-President Liakat Ali Bhuiyan, General Secretary M Wahiduzzaman, Organizing Secretary Shahidul Islam Badol and executive members architect Mohammad Al Amin and engineer Shafique Rahman attended the meeting, says a press release.

The red carpet was rolled out as Malaysian Premier Najib Razak and his spouse Rosmah Mansor arrived in the city this evening on a three-day official visit to Bangladesh.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina received her Malaysian counterpart at the VVIP Terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 8.05 pm. Two tiny tots welcomed the Malaysian Prime Minister, his wife and entourage with bouquets.

BGMEA requests Biswal to withdraw GSP suspension
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) on Sunday requested the US government to withdraw the suspension of GSP facility for Bangladeshi products in the US market.
BGMEA President M Atiqul Islam made the request during a luncheon meeting with Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Nisha Desai Biswal in a city hotel today.
Biswal was accompanied by the US Ambassador in Dhaka Dan Mozena and other US government officials, said a BGMEA release. The meeting continued for about 1.15 hours.

Bangladesh offers huge potential for halal food industry
Bangladesh offers huge potential for the establishment of a halal food industry besides serving as a platform for Malaysian companies to penetrate Western and European markets.
Malaysian High Commissioner in Bangladesh, Norlin Othman said there was huge demand for halal food products in this country of 160 million people out of which 95 per cent were Muslims.
"We are competeting with India and Thailand in the food industry but we have an edge over them because of our status as an Islamic country," she told reporters during a briefing, Sunday.
