Child marriage foes denounce proposed law in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has the world’s fourth-highest rate of child marriage, despite big gains in health and education for girls and women. Yet its government wants to allow girls to marry at age 16. A government proposal to lower the age of marriage for women from 18 to 16 would be a “terrible” setback for Bangladesh, which has made notable progress on health and education, said Human Rights Watch.
