Safety inspection begins Friday after major breakthrough in RMG

Safety inspections of all export-oriented ready made garments (RMG) and knitwear factory buildings in Bangladesh is set to begin on Friday. ADB grants $ 90m aid for Bangladesh edn programme

Asian Development Bank (ADB) Thursday signed a loan agreement worth $90 million with Bangladesh to overhaul the country's secondary education sector and build the foundation for developing a skilled labour force. The assistance is the first tranche of the $500 million Secondary Education Sector Investment Programme (SESIP) approved by ADB in September this year, said a statement from the Manila-based lender. Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad, secretary of Bangladesh's Economic Relations Division (ERD) and M. Teresa Kho, country director for ADB's Bangladesh Resident Mission, signed the loan agreement. "Skills shortage is a key challenge Bangladesh is facing to graduate to the next orbit of development," said Teresa Kho.

If violence goes on, orders may shift to other destinations

If current spell of violence goes on in RMG sector, orders from international buyers may shift to alternative destinations and thus the country may also lose foreign direct investment (FDI), said  Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI). DCCI in a statement on Wednesday said, if this kind of violence is not stopped right now, it will affect the whole industry which will cause a serious damage to the country’s economy. Labour unrest nothing but a conspiracy to destroy RMG sector

The leaders of Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) said, the recent labour unrest in Readymade Garment (RMG) sector is nothing but a conspiracy to destroy the country’s leading export sector. They appealed to the government to take all out measures for saving the Readymade Garment (RMG) factories from unruly workers, as it is the property of state. In a meeting with the high up officials of the home ministry on Tuesday, BGMEA leaders along with the leaders of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturer and Exporters Association (BKMEA) said, they were helpless to run the factories. Md Atiqul Islam, President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), led the delegation.

Travel Agency (Registration and Control) Bill passed

The Jatiya Sangsad today passed the Bangladesh Travel Agency (Registration and Control) Bill, 2013 to establish a registration authority to ensure transparency and skilled management of travel agencies. ADB to provide $1.5m tech assistance grant for RHD

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide $1.5 million for strengthening the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) as a support of the government’s institutional development initiatives. ADB and the Government of Bangladesh on November 14 signed a technical assistance (TA) grant agreement to this effect. ​The Government of Japan is financing the TA through the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction. ADB will administer the fund, and provide technical support for project implementation, says a press release. The release said the technical assistance project will help modernize the RHD and streamline its business processes. It will also support RHD to improve its schemes for maintenance of roads and bridges, and overloading control.
