AHRC appeals for UN intervention to save Bangladesh people
The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has written an open letter to UN Assistant Secretary General Oscar Fernández-Taranco for UN intervention in normalising the situation of Bangladesh, as soon as possible, for the sake of saving lives, livelihood, and liberty of a poverty-stricken nation.
Signed by AHRC Executive Director Bijo Francis, the letter was sent to Taranco on the eve of his crucial visit to Bangladesh when the country plunged into deep political and constitutional crisis.
The UN Assistant Secretary General is set to visit Bangladesh tomorrow (December 6).

Bangladesh unrest hits cross-border trade with India
Continuous political turmoil in Bangladesh is leaving a burnt hit in cross-border trade with neighbouring India.
Trade through the Petrapole-Benapole route — that accounts for over 50 percent of the bilateral trade between India and Bangladesh — has been badly hit in the last few days. Bilateral trade between India and Bangladesh stands at $5.5 billion.
The political turmoil in Bangladesh, which began with a strike call on November 30, entered its fifth day on Wednesday.

India wants a peaceful and violence-free election in Bangladesh with the participation of ‘maximum parties’, said visiting Indian foreign secretary Sujatha Singh at a meeting with senior journalists on Wednesday.

Bourses suffer amid continued political confrontation
Country’s twin bourses Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) have returned to negative after continued positive trend in two previous sessions in line with the political backdrop amid continued confrontation.
Share price index at both DSE and CSE experienced downturn on Wednesday. Earlier, both the bourses gained in two successive sessions on Monday-Tuesday following losses in four consecutive sessions till Sunday.
On Wednesday morning, trading at both the bourses began on a positive note but ended the day in red amid the news of increasing political clashes across the country.
