Deployment of wind turbines by edotco

edotco Bangladesh Co. Ltd. (“edotco”) recently has successfully installed two wind turbines in Shah Porir Dwip, Teknaf and Cox’s Bazar to support the need for power in remote coastal regions of Bangladesh.

Wind turbines are an environmentally friendly, alternative source of power for telecoms infrastructure which reduces dependency on the grid. It supplements by up to 30% the energy required from traditional sources, enabling Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to benefit from savings of fuel in off grid or poor grid sites.

With power generation in excess of 10 kWh per day per turbine, this solution decreases overall energy costs of a site by reducing generator run-time. As wind speeds pick up, the power edotcogenerated can increase by up to eight fold.

In addition, operations of wind turbines are not limited by weather conditions including tropical cyclones, day or night. The ability to continue functioning throughout is critical to keeping the site operating even in difficult conditions.

edotco Bangladesh Co. Ltd. Managing Director, Darryll Sinnappa said, “The deployment of these wind turbines is part of our Proof-of-Concepts (POC) in renewable energy. It is an important step in our initiative to enable continuous connectivity through innovative and sustainable means, while reducing carbon footprint at the same time.”

“These are the first ever wind turbines to be deployed successfully for telecom towers. Initiated three months ago, the wind turbine project is now producing an average of 12.11 kWh per day. We intend to deploy wind turbines in all off-grid sites in coastal areas, where the solution is feasible subject to wind speed and towers structure. Plans are afoot to deploy another 10 wind turbines in the year 2017,” he added.

edotco Bangladesh is a subsidiary of edotco Group, a regional integrated telecommunications infrastructure services company with operations in six countries. edotco has a footprint of over 17,000 towers in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
