EU calls for commuting death sentence

The European Union has reiterated its opposition to the use of capital punishment in all cases and under all circumstances.

The EU call came in the wake of confirmation by Bangladesh’s apex court of the death sentence to Jamaat leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman.

euOn Thursday, the EU spokesperson issued the statement on the “imminent execution” of Kamaruzzaman.

“The EU has consistently called for its universal abolition,” reads the statement.

It also argued that capital punishment is not a deterrent against crime and makes miscarriages of justice irreversible.

The EU calls on the Bangladeshi authorities to commute all death sentences and to introduce a moratorium on executions as a first step towards definitive abolition of capital punishment.
