GDP reaches at 7.03pc, GNI at $1466

The country’s GDP (gross domestic product) growth registered a phenomenal rise in the first nine months (July-March) of the current 2015-16 financial year (FY16), reaching 7.05 percent while the per capita income (GNI) surged to $1466.

Referring to the latest report of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistic (BBS), Planning Minister forexAHM Mustafa Kamal termed the economic growth as an extraordinary achievement in the country’s economic front, reports BSS.

The minister was briefing journalists after the meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) on the recent economic development.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting held at NEC on Tuesday at the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. Ministers, secretaries and high officials attended.

The GDP growth is above the targeted 7.0 percent for the current FY16, ending on June 30, 2016. It was also significantly higher than 6.6 percent economic growth achieved in the past 2014-15 fiscal year (FY15).

The GNI stood at $1,316 at the end of the FY15, prompting the World Bank (WB) up Bangladesh status to a lower-middle income country.

“By attaining 7.05 percent growth, the GDP growth rate broke the six plus percent cycle towards higher growth trajectory,” said Kamal.
