Governor to meet Fed chief, SWIFT official to recover heist money

Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor Fazle Kabir is likely to meet the head of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and a senior executive from global financial messaging service SWIFT next week to seek their firm steps to help recover the heist money, reports BSS.

“The governor will go to Basel, Switzerland next week”, the chief spokesperson of the central bank, Subhankar Saha, told BSS on Wednesday.

bbBasel is the headquarters of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), a group of major central banks.

Shaha, also an executive director of the central bank, said that two to three officials concerned of the central bank would accompany the governor during the visit.

He said the governor would meet with Federal Reserve’s president or a high official and a senior representative of the SWIFT.

“At the meeting, the governor would seek help from the Federal Reserve and the SWIFT to recover the stolen money by hackers,” the official said.

Last week, SWIFT admitted that the cyber attack on BB’s reserve money with the New York Federal Reserve was not an isolated incident, but was a part of the many recent criminal plots that aimed to take advantage of the global messaging platform used by about 11,000 financial institutions.
