OIC calls for humanitarian action to address plight of boat refugees

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has been monitoring the situation facing thousands of Rohingya and Bangladeshi refugees, asylum-seekers and economic migrants stranded on boats in the Andaman Sea and Straits of Malacca.

ThaiThe OIC Secretary General, Iyad Ameen Madani, is in communication with countries in the region and the international community to express his concern over this humanitarian crisis and discussed possible ways to alleviate the suffering of the affected people stranded on the sea.

The Secretary General further called for renewed efforts to tackle the root causes of such human tragedies in order to prevent the escalation of the situation.

He also noted that this situation is a reminder of the dire conditions facing the Rohingya people who have been denied their basic human rights and appeals to the Government of Myanmar to open its doors for proper humanitarian assistance to reach communities in need.
