Social enterprise impact across Bangladesh
The British Council launched two new survey reports titled ‘The State of Social Enterprise in Bangladesh’ and ‘Social Enterprise Policy Landscape in Bangladesh’ today at Hotel Ascott Palace Ltd. in the Baridhara region of the Capital. Produced by the British Council, the study on Bangladesh was led by Overseas Development Institute (www.odi.org) with support from BetterStories, UnLtd and Social Enterprises UK.
The first report, ‘The State of Social Enterprise in Bangladesh’, attempts for the first time to understand the scale of social enterprise activity in Bangladesh as well as the sectors in which social enterprises are focused and the beneficiaries that they support.

Fatal factory fire in Bangladesh is déjà vu
The horror of worker deaths is overshadowing Eid celebrations in Bangladesh. Last weekend, a fierce fire ripped through a three-storey packaging factory and eventually caused the building to collapse. The death toll so far at Tampaco Foils Ltd is 33 workers, with dozens more injured. Before it was reduced to ruins, Tampaco counted Nestle in Bangladesh and British American Tobacco among its multinational clients.
The Bangladesh government has announced compensation for the victims and ordered an investigation. Criminal complaints have reportedly been filed, including against the factory owner, who is a former member of parliament.
But this latest disaster begs the question: how many more people need to die before Bangladesh finally tackles its unsafe factories?
Fire kills at least 24 in Tongi
At least 24 people have been killed in a huge fire that broke out at a packaging factory in Bangladesh.
A further 70 people are reported to have been injured in the blaze at an industrial complex in Tongi, north of the capital Dhaka.
Police said about 100 people were in the four-storey building at the time, including machine operators and guards.
The blast was caused by an explosion in the boiler room, at the start of the working day, officials say.
