Rural-urban disparity: Quality questioned despite high pass rate

Urban-rural disparity continues to persist in the education system, according to results of the Secondary School Certificate and equivalent examinations published on Saturday, while the ministry keeps brushing aside such observations. Educationists and education campaigners said that the disparity continued as urban students could have coaching, private tuition and better guidance. Guardians in urban areas also spend more on students than guaridans in rural areas do. The combined pass rate in this year’s exams is 91.34 but the competence and the quality of education of successful students could be questioned, educationists said.

Budget to outline plans for next five years

Finance Minister AMA Muhith said the upcoming budget will outline programmes for the next five years, which will boost confidence of businesses and give a 'signal' that political stability will prevail. "I am sure that these plans will be implemented. This is supposed to be a sort of signal that still there is stability," he said at a pre-budget discussion at the office of Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Friday evening. The MCCI and Maasranga TV co-organised the discussion, around three weeks ahead of the announcement of the budget for fiscal 2014-15. The finance minister's remarks came after a number of businessmen said many shy away from making investment due to weak governance and the fear of political instability.

The Unnayan Onneshan cautions in its pre-national budget publication,  “Dealing with Deceleration: State of Bangladesh Economy and Development 2013-14” that the management of an economy is contingent upon the efficacy of macroeconomic policies in preventing fluctuations in output and employment and if the current expedient regimes continue the deceleration could not be averted. The current annual number, which has scrutinised the major macroeconomic indicators of growth and development, finds that short-sightedness in fiscal management and inappropriate contract...
