UN concerned over rights situation in BD

The United Nations (UN) has reiterated its concern at the potential breach of rights, especially freedom of expression and freedom of assembly, in Bangladesh.

UN-logoThe global body also urged the Bangladesh authorities to allow freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and freedom of the media.

“we’re continuing to hold the authorities to those points and, of course, we would be concerned about any breaches of that,” Farhan Haq, a deputy spokesman for the UN secretary-general said during a briefing in New York on Wednesday.

Dwelling on Bangladesh’s recent political crisis, the UN official repeated the UN call on all sides to engage in dialogue.

In reply to a query on disappearance of BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed, the deputy spokesperson said the UN officials have discussed the matter. “The concerns that you were mentioning are in line with what we’ve been talking about,” he added.

The UN has issued statements on a number of occasions since the beginning of the current wave of the political unrest in early January.
