UCB mobile financial service UCash launched
United Commercial Bank Ltd (UCB) launched its exclusive mobile financial service UCash at the Grand Ballroom of Pan Pacific Sonargaon in the city on Saturday. UCB Chairman MA Hashem inaugurated the grand UCash launching as chief guest.
Among others, Vice-Chairman of UCB Sharif Zahir, honourable Chairman of Executive Committee of UCB Saifuzzaman Chowdhury, MP, honourable Chairman of Audit Committee Lt. Gen (Retd.) Pol parties urged to keep export-import activities out of hartal
The political parties should ensure the smooth functioning of export-import and the supply chain, said Dr M Mojibur Rahman, chief executive officer of Bangladesh Foreign Trade Institute (BFTI).
“I urge all the political parties to keep goods transportation system and other supply chain management system out of political programmes like hartal and blockade for the sake of the country’s economic development,” he said.
The continuation of policy and political stability are a must for Bangladesh for its economic development, said the trade and investment expert.
Govt approves cultivation of controversial Bt brinjal
The government has approved commercial cultivation of genetically modified eggplant resistant to insect damage, marking a significant breakthrough after seven years of research, a top official said Friday.
Bangladesh becomes the 29th country in the world to commercially grow a genetically modified crop. Genetic modification of crops is one of the most controversial and polarizing issues in global agriculture. It is contested by environmental activists on concerns over food safety even as scientists research on transgenic crops to tackle drought, salinity and pest-related problems in agriculture.

Women trafficking at 20 transit points along Indo-Bangla border
Although women trafficking from Bangladesh to various destinations, including India, is not new, the malady has taken an alarming proportion as the traffickers are using 20 transit points along Bangladesh-India border comfortably.
Twenty-eight districts of Bangladesh have common borders with India and two districts have borders with Myanmar, and those are being used by the traffickers in human trafficking, especially women and children.
According to intelligence sources, the frontier areas of Khulna, Jessore, Satkhira, Rajshahi, Dinajpur, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Comilla, Brahmanbaria, and Sylhet are frequently used as land routes for human trafficking, reports UNB.
