Shrimp workers routinely exploited, say campaigners
Shrimp industry in Bangladesh is plagued by hazardous conditions and excessively low wages, according to Environmental Justice Foundation report. Western governments, large retailers and consumers should put pressure on the Bangladeshi government to ensure a fair deal for the 1.2 million workers and their dependents in the lucrative shrimp industry, campaigners have said.
Bangladesh is among the top 10 exporters of farmed shrimp; it is its second largest foreign currency earner after the garment industry.

Fake election will cause further bloodshed in Bangladesh: AHRC
The incumbent regime of Bangladesh is forcing the nation to witness a fake general election, scheduled tomorrow, says Asian Human Rights Watch (AHRC).
All the opposition parties, except the allies of the ruling regime, have boycotted this election. The government is accused of extreme politicisation of the country’s civil administration, along with the police, paramilitary agencies, and all key institutions, including the Election Commission, to ensure a favourable election result, said AHRC in a press statement here on Saturday.
