Canada supports ILO initiative in Bangladesh
Canada has announced its support to a joint initiative with the International Labour Organization (ILO) entitled “Improving Working Conditions in the Ready-Made Garment Sector” in Bangladesh, according to a press release from the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development.
“Stimulating sustainable economic growth is critical to breaking the cycle of poverty, increasing security and encouraging equality. Canada’s support for this initiative is helping to ensure that Bangladesh is better equipped to provide safe and healthy employment for its people,” said Canada’s Minister of International Development, Christian Paradis.

UN rights body seek stay on Mollah’s execution
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay called for an eleventh-hour stay of execution for Abdul Quader Mollah, convicted of war crimes in a trial that did not meet ‘stringent international standards’ for imposition of the death penalty.

Human dignity denied in Bangladesh
The Amendment 15 to the constitution of Bangladesh is critical. This amendment was borne to satisfy the wish of the incumbent Prime Minister, says Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC). Gross abuse of human rights in Bangladesh are mostly related to quest for, and maintenance of, power, which guarantees the ruling segment 'licence' to corruption and impunity, AHRC says. Oman announces compensation for 36 Bangladeshi workers
The Labour Court of Oman has recently ordered compensation to 36 Bangladeshi workers who had been working for a construction firm in the Sultanate without regular salaries for over two years.
The men, who are now waiting for their tickets and passports, will be given their dues ranging from RO1,000 to RO1,500 on the day of their departure.
A Bangladeshi Embassy official said, “Some of them might have problems like non-availability of passports, which we’ll take care of. The embassy will solve any other problem as well.”

US firm to raise $ 1b for Bangladesh RMG factories
A New York (NY) based investment firm namely Tau Investment Management Inc., has announced the commitment to raise $ 1 billion help for Bangladesh and other garment-manufacturing nations in order to construct factories with better safety and protection of workers.
According to a statement issued by Tau Investment Management Inc., the NY firm announced its commitment at the 9th Annual Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Meeting in September 2013, a four-day annual meeting, organized by former US President Bill Clinton’s foundation, that brings together sitting heads of state, business leaders, non-profit organizations and celebrities from around the globe to discuss the world’s most pressing problems.
