Is it a bridge or a suicide spot?

Suicide by leaping from the Postagola Bridge in Dhaka has been a common event for the people and the naval police over the last several years. According to police data, a total of 41 people have committed suicide by leaping from the bridge so far this year. On the other hand, police feel that there are more suicides that have not been recorded.

As per the police sources in Shampur and Keraniganj, there was an average of one suicide each year in 2021, 2020, and 2016. However, there were two suicides per year in 2019 and 2016. There have also been instances of suicide.

Police data says early suicides have not been reported on the bridge since it was opened to traffic in 1989. Despite the fact that there were 2 suicides in the early 1990s, the number of suicides climbed significantly after 2000. Every year, an average of two to three people commit suicide.

The number of people who have committed suicide outside of police records is not known to the police department. Some people attempted to leap off of this building, but their remains were found in different locations. Some of the corpses have yet to be discovered. The majority of suicides are planned for the middle of the night when darkness has fallen.

Some individuals attempted suicide by jumping into the lake in the middle of the night, but they were crushed by the pillar altar and perished as a result of their fall. Hammad Mia, a 49-year-old Postagola local, said that the bridge is now referred to as the Suicide Bridge by many people.

It has been said that the mayor’s office in the southern district has been asked to make the rails of the bridge taller to stop people from jumping off.
