Prof. Ajit Kumar Mozumder and Associate Prof. Bashir Ahmed were elected president and general secretary respectively from the Awami League baked panel at the Jahangirnagar University Teachers Association (Juta) annual election held on Saturday.
Prof. AKM Abul Kalam of Urban and Regional Planning department, who conducted the election, announced the results about 7:00 pm at the office of Teacher’s Club in the university.
Sources said, Pro-Awami League panel bagged 8 post out of 15 while BNP backed teacher’s panel obtained 7 post. A total of 476 teachers out of 506 cast their votes beginning from 9:30am to 1:30pm at JU Teachers’ Club on campus.
From AL backed panel, executive members; Prof Farid Ahmed of Physics, Prof Md Anwar Khashru Parvez of Microbiology, assistant Prof Md Wahiduzzaman of Institute of Information and Technology, Prof Md Khaled Hossain of Bangla, Prof Shahedur Rashid of Geography and Environment and Prof. Sheikh Md Manzurul Haque of Geography and environment.
From BNP panel; Vice-president Prof. Feroza Hossain of Botany, treasurer Prof Md Mamun Hossain of Chemistry, joint-secretary associate Prof Md Nazrul Islam of geography and environment, executive members are: Prof Abeda Sultana of Mathematics, Prof Mahbub Kabir of chemistry, Prof Md Mafruhi Sattar of pharmacy, Prof Shamima Sultana of Bangla.
Fewer than two platforms, the ruling Awami League and Nationalist party backed teachers were in the election, meanwhile, left leaning teacher’s body; Shikkhak Mancha did not join the election.
Alleging that the teachers’ body is not performing its due job and responsibility to teacher’s community and to the national interests, the Shikkhak Somaj refrain from participating in the election race, said associate Prof Rayhan Rayne, spoke person of Shikkhak Somaj.
Under the banner of Bangabondhu’r Adorsha o Muktijudher Chetonay Bishshasi Shikhkhok Somaj’ Awami League (AL) meantime, Nationalist Teachers’ Forum backed by BNP under the panel of ‘Bohudolieo Gonotontro, Shadheenota-Sharbovomotto o Bangladesh Jatiyotabade Bishshashe Shikhokh’.
