Selim Al Deen’s Birth Anniv Fest begins at JU

Marking the 66th birth anniversary of late iconic playwright Selim Al Deen and also the founder chairman of Drama and Dramatics department of Jahangirnagar University (JU) was observed here at the campus on Tuesday in a befitting manner.

Around at 9.30am, led by JU Vice Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam, students and teachers of Drama and Dramatics department brought out a procession from the Old Arts building. Rally02Marching through the main streets of the campus, the procession was ended at the graveyard of Selim Al Deen beside the central mosque amid placing floral wreath.

After placing floral wreath, JU VC Prof Farzana Islam said, “People always remember Selim Al Deen for his great contribution of play literature. He also created a social movement through drama.”

Also, different cultural organizations including Bangladesh Gram Theatre, Dhaka Theatre, Swapno Dal, Desh Bangla Natta Dal, Selim Al Deen Foundation, Bunon Theatre, Taluknagar Theatre and JU TSC placed floral wreath.

Among others, JU pro-VC Prof. Abul Hossain, Treasurer Abul Khair, Combined Cultural Alliance Nasir Uddin Usuf Bacchu, Selim’s wife Begumzadee Meherun Nessa, JU registrar Abu Bakr Siddique and chairperson of the Drama and Dramatics department Prof Khaeruzzaman Mitu participated in the procession.

Later, at about 12:00am, a photography exhibition on Selim Al Deen was also held at the Seminar room of the JU Jaheer Raihan Audotorium while a drama ‘Usha Utshob’ written by Selim Al Deen was also staged at the Drama Lab-2 in the evening.

As the part of the programme, a drama ‘Sharna Boyal’ of Selim AL Deen will be staged at the Threatre Lab at 7:00pm on Wednesday while the next day ‘Sharna Boyal’ will be staged at the Shilpakala Academy.
