7th Nat’l Undergrade Math Olympiad at JU

The 7th National Undergraduate Mathematics Olympiad 2015 for honors’ level students held at Mathematics department of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Friday here on campus. Bangladesh Mathematics Society and Jahangirnagar University organized the Olympiad jointly.

A total of 116 students from 12 public and private universities took part in the contest. The contest was started from 10.30am to 12pm.

JU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Farzana Islam inaugurated the Olympiad at the premises of math 8Mathematics department as the chief guest while executives of Bangladesh Mathematics Society and dean of Physical and Mathematical Science Prof Nurul Alam were attended the programme.

‘World is moving ahead with advancement of science which is closely related with Mathematics. There has a fear about mathematics among our students, but mathematics is very much important for our nation. This Olympiad helps to crate nationwide awareness about the importance of mathematics’ said JU VC Prof. Farzana Islam at inaugurating session.

The top 10 were awarded with crests and certificates for their excellence while all participants got participatory certificate. The top scorer are Md Tarikul Islam, Abdul Mohaimin Patwary and Md Billal Hossen from Uttara University, Kaushiq Islam from DUET, Pinku Debnath, Anika Tasnim and Sumaira Samiha from NSU, Istiaque Ahmed, Shakibul Islam and Emran Islam from JU.

At the second phase, a discussion and question-answer session conducted by Prof Dr Laek Sazzad Andallah was also held at Mathematics Gallery. Associate Prof Dr Osman Gani presented a key note on ‘Mathematics: Surrounding to World’.

Pro-VC of the university Prof Dr Abul Hossain distributed the prizes and crests among the top ten winners while Chairman of JU Mathematics department also Member Secretary of the Olympiad Organizing Committee Prof Dr Abdur Rab was chaired.

Among others, Secretary of Bangladesh Mathematics Society Dr M Shahidul Islam, Prof Dr Laek Sazzad Andallah, Prof Abdul Alim, Member Secretary and convener of the Olympiad Prof Abdur Rab and Prof Sayed Sabbir Ahmed were also present.

Mentionable, with the financial support from AF Mujibur Rahmman Foundation, the BMS has been arranging the event since 2009. As a part of the national event, the Olympiad has been being organized every year in the country’s six regions including Khulna, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Dhaka North and Dhaka South.
