Bangladesh to join 2nd submarine cable by early 2016

Bangladesh will be connected with the second submarine cable having a total capacity of 1,400 Gbps, by early 2016, said officials. They said Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited who is responsible for maintenance of the submarine cable is going to sign a deal next month with a consortium of 17 countries to set up the SEA-ME-WE 5 cable as an alternative source of bandwidth. Talking to the news agency, Abu Bakar Siddique, post and telecommunications secretary, said: ‘We will connect with second submarine cable by the first quarter of 2016 and the cable will have a total capacity of 1,400 Gbps.’

Grameenphone, BRAC to provide free internet access to students

Grameenphone in collaboration with BRAC will provide 21-lakh hour of free internet for school children from this month. The decision, inspired by 21st February, Language Movement Day, was announced at a ceremony at Ali Hossain Girls High School in Dhanmondi on Monday. Grameenphone, Bangladesh’s largest mobile phone operator, will provide the free hours to 250 schools around the country under its “Internet for All” initiative, it said in a press release. Students of these schools will be able to use free internet in the ‘Gonokendras’, multi-purpose community learning centres managed by BRAC at school premises. GP-Internet
