Japan to provide 500m Yen grant aid for primary education

The Japanese government will provide 500 million Japanese Yen or approximately Tk 49.19 crore to Bangladesh as grant aid for the Primary Education Development Program-3 (PEDP-3). In this regard, ‘Exchange of Notes’ and ‘Grant Agreements’ are scheduled to be signed on Thursday at the Economic Relations Division (ERD) in city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. ERD Secretary Md Abul Kalam Azad will sign the ‘Exchange of Notes’ and the ‘Grant Agreements’ on behalf of Bangladesh while Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Shiro Sadoshima and JICA Bangladesh Office Chief Representative Dr Takao Toda will sign the ‘Exchange of Notes’ and ‘Grant Agreements’ respectively for the government of Japan, said an ERD official.

Telenor CEO concerned over Bangladesh political impasse

The top executive of Norwegian telecommunication giant Telenor says, he is worried over protracted political impasse regarding the next election in Bangladesh. Jon Fredrik Baksaas, president and group chief executive of Telenor ASA, which has nearly 55 percent share in Bangladesh’s largest mobile phone operator Grameenphone, told reporters in the Thai capital of Bangkok that he expected the bickering political camps would find a quick solution. “Otherwise”, he said, “A prolonged crisis will hurt foreign investment in the country. Empowering youth with disabilities in Bangladesh thru’ ICT

In Bangladesh, youth with disabilities often have difficulty transitioning to work, as they lack the necessary skills to perform competitively in the job market and also face discrimination from employers on the basis of their disability. When the World Bank and Microsoft announced the regional grant competition “Youth Solutions! Technology for Skills and Employment”, we decided to submit a proposal to address this from the Young Power in Social Action (YPSA) in Bangladesh. Our proposed project titled “Empowering Youth with Disabilities through Market Driven ICT Skills” sought ideas from youth on how to use innovative and creative methods to promote ICT skills amongst youth with disabilities to help them secure gainful employment.

Revenue shortfall widens in tax receipts

The shortfall in revenue collection further widened in the first four months of the current fiscal year. Officials of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) said, NBR continued to struggle in achieving its revenue collection target amid volatile political environment and economic slowdown prevailing in the country. According to NBR data released on Thursday, the revenue board fell short of target by Tk 3,119.68 crore or 8.58 per cent in July-October of FY 2013-14.
