BRAC receives Healthcare Innovation Award
An innovative programme by development organisation BRAC transforming health for women and children in Dhaka’s slums has been awarded a prize in the first global GSK and Save the Children $1million Healthcare Innovation Award.
BRAC is one of five organisations, from a long list of nearly 100 applications from 29 countries from across the developing world, selected to share the award. It will receive $300,000 to pilot test its programme, called Manoshi, in the slums of Freetown, Sierra Leone, where under-five and maternal mortality rates are amongst the highest in the world.

AIUB, Shooting Federation sign MoU
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the American International University – Bangladesh (AIUB) and National Shooting Federation – Bangladesh (NSFB) was signed at the National Shooting Complex in the city recently.
On behalf of AIUB, Ishtiaque Abedin, Founder and Vice President (Public Relations and Int’l Affairs) and on behalf of NSFB, Enthekhabul Hamid, General Secretary signed the memorandum.
The MoU will be effective for next 3 years starting from 1st November 2013 to 31st October 2016. There is also option of extending the MoU even after 3 years.

Top 10 remitters to be rewarded each year: NRB database launched
Bangladesh Bank (BB) will reward ten top remitters every year to encourage Non-Resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) to send home their hard-earned money for the development of the country.
BBB Governor Dr. Atiur Rahman Monday launched NRB (non-resident Bangladeshi) Database Web Link to help get connected with central bank, promote and uphold investment information and make it as hub for the NRBs.
"I've instructed officials concerned to take necessary measures to honour top remittance senders from this year," said the BB Governor.
Describing the NRBs as national heroes of Bangladesh, the Governor said NRBs must be respected because of their contribution for the country's economy.

Pakistan eager to introduce visa-free travel to India
Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif has once again indicated that his country is eager to introduce visa free travel to India and he is ready to strengthen ties with the neighbour. On Sunday, Sharif made a strong plea for resuming peace ties with India on immediate basis, saying: “We must aim to dismantle visa requirement between the two countries.”
Talking to the local media in Lahore, the seasoned politician said that the Indian media could play an important role in this regard. According to him, the Indian media persons should try to convince the leadership in New Delhi to sit together with the Pakistani leaders in an attempt to resolve outstanding bilateral issues.

Dhaka signs TICFA with Washington
Dhaka has at last signed the much-hyped deal — Trade and Investment Cooperation Forum Agreement (TICFA) which will, the government thinks, help expand trade and investment between Bangladesh and the USA through enhanced cooperation.
Acting Deputy United States Trade Representative (USTR) Wendy Cutler and Bangladesh Commerce Secretary Mahbub Ahmed signed TICFA on behalf of their respective sides in Washington on Monday.
TICFA provides an important mechanism for the United States and Bangladesh to discuss bilateral trade and investment issues as well as a forum to pursue cooperative activities, according to the USTR.
